One Day Tour Delphi (or Delphoi) - Arachova
Drive through the fertile plain of Viotia, crossing the town of Thebes, visit the Archeological Museum of Levadia and the Water Sources of Kria’s and of course the castle.
Drive through the Monastery of St.Loukas of the 11th century. The trip also includes a visit to the monastery of Osio Lukas.
In the year 946 AC he first built his cell, a small church in which to pray. He also made a beautifull garden in which he grew his vegetables. He did not, however, manage to finish it.
He died on February 7th 953 at the age of 56. The monastery is famous for it’s wall paintings. Those paintings have been cleaned and restored recently and they exhibit special interest.
We continue our drive going through Arahova (famous for its hand made carpets and quilts and also famous as one of the best ski resorts in Greece) and then we will be arriving at Delphi.
The archaeological site of Delphi is one of the most important ancient relics of Greece. The magnitude of the Delphi contributions to the entire ancient civilization cannot be overstated.
Delphi is primarily famous as a shrine to Apollo and for its Oracle. A priestess of Apollo, called the Pthia, would sit in a grotto and under the influence of sweet smelling, intoxicating gasses she would come up with predictions of the future - this is the site where Oedipus was told his terrible fate and Socrates that there was no man wiser than he!
The oracle had a reputation of making TRUE but very obscure pronouncements.
Delphi is perched on a mountain, with a spectacular set of views who's beauty has been remarked on from ancient times to modern. The name Delphi has the same root word as the modern English "Dolphin", and refers to Apollo coming to the site originally (down by the port, of course) in the form of a dolphin. The oracle of Delphi operated for farther back than we have records, and the final recorded pronouncement was that given to Justin the Apostate when he tried to revive the old religion in the face of the growing Christian churches. That pronouncement (known by heart by most Greeks) was the death stroke for the old religion.
We will visit the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo and the museum, which contains masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture including the famous bronze Charioteer.
After we will visit Arachova which is a mountain small town next to Delphi.
A traditional picturesque town located high up on the slopes of Mount Parnassos, Arachova has much to offer its visitors.Next to some of the best skiing in Greece, this quaint old town has become a modern ski resort with the latest winter sports equipment available for sale or rental.
Also ideal for a cool summer vacation away from the crowds, it is close to beaches of Itea and mountain hiking trails. Its quaint houses are built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos, with 3300 inhabitants, 800 - 1100m altitude, 157 km from Athens, 25 km from Parnassus (Parnassos) ski centres, 8km from Delphi, and about 25km from beautiful beaches Antikira, Itea, and Galaxidi.
